| Hello all, we would be interested to learn more about the laws, apart from CITES,which exist in your respective countries about: -private reptile keeping -venomous snakes, tarantulas, poison dart frogs -any local restriction for keeping and breeding your national fauna; -if there are lists in your countries of species which are considered dangerous; -laws concerning reptile and amphibian fauna in your overseas territories; -laws and requirements about professional/amateur keeping "capacity". Thanx. ______________________________________________________________________La Nature ne s'arrête pas aux vitres d'un terrarium. |

| private reptile keeping - there are no restrictions as such in England apart from the DWA license, you can keep any reptile that is not condsidered a danger to the public without a license/inspection. -venomous snakes, tarantulas, poison dart frogs - Most but not all venomous species are listed on the DWA (dangerous wild animals act) and you must possess a license to own these animals. However what conditions have to be met varies by county as local authorities grant the license. Some tarantulas are also on the DWA i think but most can be kept by anyone. I dont think dart frogs are restricted at all. -any local restriction for keeping and breeding your national fauna; - All british native reptiles are heavily protected and it is an offence to disturb their habitat, capture or breed any native species. The rule does not apply to non-native subspecies however. -if there are lists in your countries of species which are considered dangerous;-This is essentially just the DWA. You can still keep animals on the DWA list but you must be licensed to do so. Local authorities set the license fee and the criteria you must meet to possess a license. Usually you must be competant with the species you wish to keep and have a safe room with locking vivs and preferably a double door. Some authorities hardly ever grant a DWA license and others are quite relaxed. The fee also varies greatly by area. laws concerning reptile and amphibian fauna in your overseas territories; - Apart from CITES I am unaware of any restriction on the owning and breeding of reptiles from england's overseas territories. -laws and requirements about professional/amateur keeping "capacity".- Provided you are not keeping DWA animals there is no required level of ability, effectively anyone can own any legal reptile without having a specific level of ability. If you apply for a DWA however you will usually have to show you are competant enough around the animal to not cause a danger to the public. The DWA does not protect the keeper, only the public at large.
A list of animals covered by the DWA act can be found here: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/gwd/animallist.pdf |
